Family Caregivers: Introduction to
This course is designed for family caregivers to provide an introduction to brain injury, its effects, recovery, and more. Learn how brain injury impacts both you and your loved one, and tips/tools for supporting both of you.
This self-guided course is available to caregivers, including family caregivers, free of charge, and developed through the support of the Petro-Canada CareMakers Foundation. It covers an introduction to brain injury from diagnosis to recovery (which is often life-long), and touches on important topics such as the role of caregivers in recovery; tools for managing challenging behaviours for the support and safety of loved ones; strategies for safely supporting additional cognitive, emotional, and physical effects; and the intersectional nature of brain injury, and how identity and society impact health and recovery.
Caregivers will learn from first-person perspectives and videos from health care experts designed to provide an introduction to aspects of brain injury that can help support people who have become the primary caregivers for a loved one with a brain injury. Brain injury is a nuanced and complex chronic condition that results in a variety of changes that can be difficult to navigate. A key part of Brain Injury Canada’s mission is to provide education about brain injury, and this first in a series of courses for caregivers made possible through the Petro-Canada CareMakers Foundation will provide a strong base of knowledge.
